Bucket List Destination: Costa Brava

Catalonia is Spain’s most independent-minded region, boasting its own identity and language dating back to the middle ages. Now, Catalonia is the most popular tourist region with its Blue Flag beaches, fabulous hotels and resorts, 360 miles of breathtaking coastline, world-class gastronomy (more than 300 wineries, and 50 Michelin-star restaurants), amazing architecture and beautifully preserved monuments.
Top Guide Alessandro Allegro has designed a spectacular 8-day bike tour of the Costa Brava that celebrates its ancient heritage and distinct Catalonian identity. While he is a native Italian, he spends half of the year in Spain on the Costa Blanca.
Here’s an overview:
This tour starts in the medieval city of Girona, an excellent place to enjoy everything a small city has to offer. It offers a beautiful historic quarter that attracts many visitors and easy to navigate on foot. There are lots of museums there, and the buildings are all built of stone along narrow streets. The province of Girona boasts 16 restaurants, 2 of which are Michelin-star, including the famous restaurant El Celler de Can Roca.
Our next visit is the beautiful seaside town of L’Escala, surrounded by fabulous sandy beaches and fresh seafood. One of the best memories that you’ll take home from L’Escala is the delicious food, reflecting an exquisite combination of culinary tradition and creative spirit. The gastronomy of Catalonia is rich and varied, and a typical and delicious specialty from L’Escala are their famous anchovies.
For those interested in Catalan culture, L’Escala is host to several festivals throughout the year; there are lots of museums and monuments including the ancient ruins of Empuries, the Museum of Salt and the fabulous Salvador Dali Museum.
Our tour continues and finishes in Tossa de Mar, a historic town with well-preserved ruins and castles, nowadays an emblematic tourist destination of the Costa Brava area. Its charming and picturesque landscape, the sandy beaches and coves, the narrow streets with souvenir shops, cafes and restaurants, monuments and museums will be you fondest memories of Spain.
Catalonia is by far one of the best places in the word to bike!
