Day1

Adirondack Welcome!

We will meet at the Phoenix Inn and Resort in North Creek. After a get-acquainted and safety session, we will start our ride with a visit to the amazing North Creek Mosaic Project downtown, then head out across the Hudson River and into the Adirondack forests. The rolling terrain will show off views of local landmark Moxham Mountain and the small homesteads, ponds, and streams that characterize this part of the Adirondacks, then take us back downhill to the quiet hamlet of Riparius on the shore of the Hudson river for our rest stop. It’s historic train station, built in 1913, served as the local stop on the Delaware and Hudson Railway. We’ll continue on to Wevertown, named for founder Andrus Wever, a Revolutionary War veteran who settled here with his family in 1795. Then we will continue through Johnsburg, where logging, tanneries, and other industries flourished in the 19th century. Heading back toward North Creek, we will pass Gore Mountain, where a major ski resort offers world class skiing in winter and mountain biking in the summer. A post-ride happy hour will offer a chance to get better acquainted and learn more about the ‘Dacks.

Day2

Loch Muller and Irishtown Loop

Today we head deep into the Adirondack forests to the southern border of the Hoffman Notch Wilderness at Loch Muller and Irishtown. After passing through Olmstedville, we head north on Trout Brook Road to a stop at Hornbeck Boats, renowned builders of Adirondack pack boats. Then it’s onward to a short detour to the Wamsley Road overlook, with its beautiful views into the Vanderwhacker Mountain Wild Forest. We’ll continue on along the banks of Trout Brook and along the quiet roads of the deep forest through Loch Muller on our way to Irishtown, where a picnic lunch at the Historic Saint Mary’s Church will give you time to explore this local landmark built in 1848 and learn about early life in this frontier area.

The Roosevelt Trail

Today is the “Queen Stage” of our trip as we take the entire day to retrace the historic route of Theodore Roosevelt’s epic midnight ride from Tahawus to North Creek to assume the Presidency in 1901 after learning of the death of William McKinley. We begin our ride at the North Creek train station across the street from our hotel, where museum exhibits will give us historic context for the day ahead. Then we will once again head north across the Hudson, past Moxham Mountain, and onward toward Tahawus with its ghost town and spectacular views of the Adirondack High Peaks. As we climb deeper into the heart of the Adirondacks forest you will get an idea of the wilderness the first trappers and explorers found in the early 1800’s. Once we reach the turnoff for Tahawus the road flattens out and we pedal along the headwaters of the Hudson toward the mining district that led adventurers and businessmen to this area. We will stop at the McIntyre Iron Furnace that marks the spot of the original iron smelting operation, and then continue to the ghost town with its historical exhibits and a chance to see the High Peaks up close and the mighty Hudson as only a small stream.

Mountains to Lakes ride

Today’s ride will be short on distance, but long on fun as we pedal toward our next lodgings at the Friends Lake Inn. We’ll start with a visit to the beautiful waterfall along the North Creek that gives the village its name. Then it’s a rolling descent through the towns of Thurman and into Johnsburg. (Both are named for John Thurman, one of the first settlers in the area in 1792.) On the way we will stop at Nettle Meadow Farm to visit the animal sanctuary and see their available artisanal cheeses. Then it’s a beautiful flat cruise along the shores of the Hudson River with a lunch stop for a picnic at the riverside. Leaving the river, we climb back up and around Friends Lake before arriving at the beautifully rustic Friends Lake Inn, our home for the next two nights.

It’s the perfect home base to experience the beauty of the Adirondacks.

Three Lakes Loop

Today we will enjoy a scenic, casually paced tour of the heart of the southern Adirondacks lake country and see why the area has become such a popular destination for cyclists. We’ll leave the Friends Lake Inn and ride over the hill to the village of Chestertown for a lunch stop at the friendly Main Street Ice Cream Parlor. Created in a former schoolhouse, this local landmark offers a full menu of lunch treats plus the expected frozen delights served up in an authentic small town lunch counter atmosphere. Back on the road we’ll make a quick stop for a fun group photo at the Giant Chicken sculpture that beckons to visitors, then begin our tour along the shore of Loon Lake and on northward to Pottersville and Schroon Lake, the largest of our destinations. The cool blue waters and mountain views of Schroon last for miles as we pedal into the small hamlet of Adirondack and our next stop at its traditional general store. From there it’s into the woods to secluded Beaver Pond, then downhill toward Brant Lake. Quiet Palisades Road along the north shore will lead us to The Hub, our final rest stop where you can enjoy a cold beer, ice cream, or just the country ambiance of this social center of the area.

Return ride to North Creek

It’s time to return to North Creek to end our Adirondack adventure, but we’re going to make this last day count! Saying farewell to the Friends Lake Inn, we will pedal north and around beautiful Loon Lake, then head back uphill toward North Creek. Midway through today’s ride, we will stop for a short (2.1 miles round trip) hike to the top of Meade and Beckman Mountains, offering spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and lakes that let us say a fond farewell to the beauty of the Adirondacks.
