Basilicata’s Treasured City: Matera

A panoramic view of an ancient stone city on a hilltop with rugged terrain and a deep ravine in the foreground under a partly cloudy sky, perfect for unforgettable bike tours in Italy.

BASI_Day_3-4_Puglia_Day7-8_Matera_Sextanio-7.jpgDear Matera,

We are so incredibly excited to revisit the jewled-city of Matera on our magnificent Bike Across Southern Italy trip. Nothing beats seeing this place through the enchanted eyes of Ciclismo Classico guests as we roam the maze of sassi (cave houses) under the city center and to see not only how people lived once upon a time—but are still living today!

And in-between the cave districts of Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso, it’s always really exciting to check out the Byzantine rock – rupestrian churches nestled in between and donning some of the most amazing Byzantine frescoes dating back to the eighth and ninth centuries. Simply amazing.

Of course we also love the Medieval Museum, the multi-media show at Casa Noha and we can’t wait to sit down again to feast on the local capuntini pasta with fresh chicory and fava bean pureè at our favorite Ristorante Baccanti. Delicious!

We’ll continue to share all of Matera best kept treasures with guests fortunate enough to join our fabulous Southern Italian bike tour. In 2017 we have a great line-up of dates and departures so we’ll be back over and over again to enjoy all these remarkable sites.

Matera, here we come!
