Bolzano-Sigmundskron Warm-up Ride

Your guides are available at the hotel from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm to assist with an early bike fitting. We regroup at 12:30 pm for a light lunch and introduction. After a safety talk, and completing any late bike fittings, we head out for a warm-up ride. This ride alone is worth the trip! The route starts on the bike paths of Bolzano, known as the most bike-friendly city in Italy. Just beyond the city limits, we follow the historic railway track that leads to the “wine area” of Caldaro. Once we reach this destination, we connect with the “wine road,” which winds through stunning vineyards, offering a magnificent landscape. Upon our return, a local guide will introduce us to this exquisite medieval city with a super-modern lifestyle. Dinner is at an ancient brewery, where we learn about local brewing and traditional dishes.

Bolzano to Canazei

We begin our journey with a flat warm-up from the city center, followed by our first climb to the Val d’Ega, one of the lesser-known valleys of South Tyrol. In this region, the Austrian language and culture still prevail among the locals and are evident in its German road signs, cuisine, and traditions. It is a testament to Italy’s diverse cultural heritage. After conquering another pass in the afternoon, we reach Canazei, a popular ski resort that is equally worth visiting in the winter months. We find ourselves in the Val di Fassa, where the local culture is distinctly Ladin. This region is home to a rare and well-preserved ethnic group with roots dating back to ancient Roman time.

The Four Passes Loop

Today, we enjoy a famous ride around the four passes of the “Sellaronda,” one of the Alps’ most beautiful circuits. It is a dream come true for skiers and also a challenge for cyclists. The ride is about 35 miles long and goes around the majestic Sella Massif, up and down the passes of Sella, Gardena, Campolongo, and Pordoi. Discover “the soul of the sport of cycling” like nowhere else. Every year, millions of riders come to follow the tracks of the greatest cyclists of the past, like Bartali and Coppi, who built their legends on these ramps. This stunning circuit includes four famous passes, the Sella (2213m/7260ft), Gardena (2121m/6960ft), Campologno (1875m/6151ft), and the Pordoi (2239m/7346ft).

Canazei to Cortina

Our journey begins with a climb to Passo Fedaia, which takes us to the artificial lake Fedaia. The lake is nestled beneath the remnants of the once majestic Marmolada glacier. After a thrilling descent, we climb back up to reach the iconic Falzarego Pass. This challenging Dolomite pass features an 885-meter vertical climb, with its peak perched at 2117 meters. Falzarego has been traversed 19 times by the Giro d’Italia and is particularly renowned for its 17 switchbacks, adding to the allure. The climb to Passo Falzarego has a gentler start, allowing you to warm up for the 10.6-kilometer climb, with grades ranging from 4% to 10%. Starting at 1,414 meters (4,640 feet) in Andraz, the elevation gain is significant enough to observe changes in vegetation, transitioning from meadows and dense pine forests to rugged cliff faces. One of the hairpin turns is a tunnel carved into the dolomite! At the top of Passo Falzarego, if the weather is good, we can park our bikes and take a cable car to reach Lagazuoi Peak. and explore the history of the “war in the mountains,” which saw Italians and Austrians carving tunnels, foxholes, and shelters over kilometers between 1915 and 1916. Our journey continues with a lengthy descent leading us to Cortina, the host town of the 1956 Olympics, which will host it again in 2026.

Cortina to Brunico

Today, we head north and climb the easy Tre Croci pass before continuing towards the iconic Tre Cime di Lavaredo. The three peaks stand like gigantic fingers pointing to the sky. The road leading to them challenges riders with its occasional steep grades. Still, the payoff is well worth it. At the summit, a breathtaking, unending vista unfolds, encompassing the entire expanse of the Dolomites. Eventually, we descend into Brunico, a medieval little town perfectly preserved. After a well-deserved rest, the unique and colorful old town setting invites you to linger and stroll.

Brunico to Bolzano

On the final day of our tour, we explore the lesser-known Tintal Valley. The path through the valley is narrow and peaceful and winds through pastures and forests, gradually ascending to the charming village of Antermoia. From there, we will follow a wider road leading to the Passo delle Erbe, a legendary location steeped in folklore and dark witch tales, celebrated annually in a festival. In the past, witches were blamed for mountain mishaps, loss of livestock, and severe storms. After a long descent into Gudon, we reach the Isarco River and trace its scenic bike path for 20 miles, eventually returning to Bolzano.
