Carnaval in Gran Canaria

carn5.jpg

In Gran Canaria, Carnaval is a colorful, annual celebration taking place throughout the island every early February to early March. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Carnaval is one of the oldest, most deeply rooted and unique festivals of the Canary Islands capital. For over five centuries the city has celebrated with masquerading, merrymaking and flesh! If you want to experience this most famous and exuberant party—come hang out with us in Las Palmas! Colourful costumes, dancing and singing is mainly what Carnaval is all about. Some of the local people are so enthusiastic about the Carnaval events they  travel around the island following the daily or weekly festivities.

Typically the line-up of fantastic shows start with an opening speech (pregón), full of humour and irony. Then, during the weeks leading up to the climax of the last
Carnaval weekend – before Ash Wednesday – there are competitions for the ‘murgas’ (typical carnival bands who sing satirical, comic songs), the ‘comparsas’ (Brazilian-like carnival dancers) and musical groups mixed with many other events including drag queen competitions, comedy shows and much more. The party-event of a lifetime, we say! What could create a more spectacular beginning or festive ending to our February Gran Canaria trip? This is the real deal.
