Italy’s neighbor to the east, Croatia, offers idyllic cycling through a medieval landscape of castles and vineyards, all with stunning views of the Adriatic Sea.

Trieste, located at the head of the Gulf of Trieste, has long been influenced by its location at the crossroads of Germanic, Latin, and Slavic cultures. In the 19th century, it served as the most important port of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until it became part of Italy after WWI.

Once part of the province of Trieste until WWII, Istria is Croatia’s largest peninsula and has been named the most popular new destination by the Croatian National Tourist Board. This magnificent landmass, shaped over centuries by the Adriatic Sea, boasts a jagged coastline dotted with lagoons and islands, while its hilly interior and mountainous northeast are covered in rich forests.

The Northern Adriatic Coast offers breathtaking natural beauty paired with historical landmarks such as medieval villages and Byzantine cathedrals. Bright blue waters hug a coastline adorned with architectural wonders, all framed by deep green, truffle-filled forests.

Trieste warm-up ride

Our tour begins in Trieste, a city that has served as the natural gateway to Eastern Europe for centuries. Influenced by Italian, Austro-Hungarian, and Slavic cultures, Trieste is the largest city and capital of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. We meet at 12:30 pm in our hotel lobby for introductions, followed by an introductory lunch at Hops Beerstrò. After lunch, we do a bike fitting and head out for a warm-up ride. In the evening, we enjoy a guided walking tour of Trieste to learn more about this fascinating city, followed by dinner in town.

Trieste to Umag

Our loop takes us to Grožnjan, a village renowned as a haven for artists and musicians in Istria. This charming hilltop village is widely considered one of the most beautiful medieval towns in the region. As we cycle, we take in views of the Mirna River flowing below and the lush green forests abundant with white truffles on the opposite bank. These forests, rooted in Croatian folklore as the home of monsters and giants, are also the source of the finest Istrian white wines, grown in nearby vineyards. We stop for a light lunch at the Kozlović Winery, including a visit to the wine cellar and a wine tasting. Savor the local Malvasia and Moscato, crafted by one of Istria’s leading winemakers. Tonight, we’ll walk to dinner at a local restaurant.

Umag to Rovinj

We leave the quiet, hilly mainland and ride toward the flat, sunny shores of the Istrian Riviera. Our first stop is the Jama Baredine Cave, a stunning ancient limestone cavern formed over millions of years. While you explore, your guides will prepare a delicious picnic lunch. In the afternoon, we cycle through the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Poreč and continue toward Rovinj, with frequent opportunities to stop and admire breathtaking views of the sea. Known for its exceptional climate and lush Mediterranean greenery, Rovinj is a popular destination for visitors. The approach to Rovinj is unforgettable: we take a boat ride through the Limsky Kanal, a fjord-like channel, offering a scenic entry into the city. Dinner tonight is on your own.

Optional Rovinj Loop

Today’s optional ride takes you to Dvigrad, with the opportunity to return to the hotel by lunchtime. Alternatively, you can spend the day at your leisure, enjoying the hotel’s facilities, taking a dip in the Adriatic, or strolling through the charming streets of Rovinj. For those who choose to ride, soak in the vibrant blues and greens of the landscape as you head east, leaving behind the Venetian charm of Rovinj. The city’s majestic bell tower, reminiscent of Venice San Marco Square, serves as a striking coastal landmark. In the evening, we have a guided walking tour before enjoying dinner at La Puntulina, one of the area’s finest restaurants. Cycling around Dvigrad (“Two Castles”) is worth it! Visit the beautiful Roman settlement of Bale and explore the town center’s winding cobblestone lanes. Enjoy a relaxing afternoon here before returning to Rovinj. Another highlight of the day is discovering the authentic rural areas of the Istrian Peninsula, such as the village of Barat.

Rovinj to Pula

Today, we ride inland from Rovinj to Pula. We begin the day by visiting the well-preserved medieval village of Svetvinčenat, home to the famous Grimaldi Castle. We continue to Pula, the largest city in Istria and often regarded as the region’s capital. Located near the tip of the peninsula, Pula offers a rich blend of ancient landmarks, Venetian architecture, and Mediterranean charm The city is also renowned for its fantastic seafood restaurants. Our lunch stop is in Loborika at restaurant Vesna, where we sample a selection of goat and sheep cheeses alongside an olive oil tasting. Dinner will be at a nearby restaurant.

Pula Loop

Our final ride takes us to the historic heart of Pula, where we join a local guide for a walking tour of the city’s most iconic landmarks, including the magnificent Pula Arena—the second-largest amphitheater after Rome’s Coliseum and one of last remaining 6th. This evening, we come together to celebrate our journey with a memorable final dinner at La Lanterna!
