Our Favorite Italian Hill Towns To Visit!

cyclists cheering

Anyone who has cycled in Italy will agree that one of the most unique experiences is pedaling from hill town to hill town. There’s nothing quite like spinning along, gazing at a village perched on a distant hill, and having your guide say, “yup…that’s where we going!” Then as if that special place has a magnetic pull on your bicycle, you find yourself (almost) there before you know it.

From the North to the South and to the Italian island of Sicily, here are some our favorite hill towns – each town is rich in history and charm, has amazing views, and is best enjoyed by bike! Andiamo!

Northern Italy: La Morra

The beautiful village of La Morra and its vineyards in the Langhe region of Piedmont, Italy.

La Morra is a picturesque town located in Piedmont, surrounded by a patchwork of vineyards. On a sunny day, you’ll get to see some of the most impressive views of the Langhe area.  This region is famous for its hilltop castles and fortresses, and is best known for producing some of Italy’s best wines: Barolo!  Explore our Piedmont Bike Tour.

Central Italy: Ahhh, Orvieto!

Pedaling towards Orvieto, the view of this extraordinary hill town is unforgettable. Orvieto was one of the most important cities in the region during Etruscan times and later served as a home for the pope. With a history like that, it should come as no surprise that Orvieto is a must-see.  Known for its shimmering cathedral, peaceful piazza, and underground caves, Orvieto will be forever in your heart.  Explore our Bike Across Italy Tour!

Southern Italy: Cool Castelmezzano

Nestled in the peaks of the Dolomiti Lucane Mountains, Castelmezzano is a small mountainside town in the southern region of Basilicata. This town is one of Italy’s hidden gems with colorful buildings, a medieval atmosphere, narrow streets, and a cluster of stone houses.  Reaching Castelmezzano is quite a treat as you will pedal through a tunnel carved into the rocks! Explore our Bike Across Southern Italy Bike Tour.

Southern Italy: Magical Matera

Matera is a small town in the southern region of Basilicata, a rather remote and often overlooked part of Italy.  The city is entirely carved out of rocks, the so called “sassi”.   It is known as the city of caves with spectacular scenery, stylish cave hotels, and a fascinating history. It is one of the most beautiful places you can ever see in Italy and has a story so unique, it will be hard to forget. Explore our La Bella Puglia Bike Tour!

Sicily: Baroque Ragusa

Ragusa is one of the most stunning towns in Sicily.  Located on a hilltop, it’s famous for its unusual layout and stunning Sicilian Baroque architecture. There are two parts to Ragusa.  The old city Ragusa Ibla is a baroque masterpiece — separated from the “modern” Ragusa Superiore. Explore our La Bella Sicilia Bike Tour!
