How Bicycle Travel Transforms Lives: Sheryl Ber

bicycle tour

Perhaps you are the solitary cyclist.

You know, that one bicyclist who does not have time (or room) for anyone else to bike with.

How could you possibly fit into a “group tour” if you have spent most for your time being by yourself?

If this sounds like you, give a listen to Sheryl’s story.

I have had the privilege of having Sheryl on our departure in Costa Brava with a large group and she had a wonderful time. She realizes the exposure to the group experience is fundamental to who she is as an individual: as a teacher of groups of small people.

Here she is in her own words:

The Teaching:

“Traveling and experiencing various cultures are passions in my life. Another passion of mine is my work. I put my heart and soul into my work. Along with extra hours (my own personal time), I also use a lot of my personal money.

I teach little people. I teach at an impoverished elementary school (currently first grade). Yes, I do teach to a curriculum. I also teach these precious little ones how to live with a passion for life. I try to teach them how to explore the world around them and create a life that matters-a life of their own. This is a challenge for 6 year olds from an impoverished area to grasp, but they do an excellent job.

The Travel:

By the end of our school year, I’m spent: emotionally, physically, and financially- spent. I need my summer to recharge. I embark on a joyful journey of exploration. By choice, I start out solo…yes, I travel alone. I’m a selfish traveler, and I don’t like to compromise much on my trips. During the school year, I give a good portion of my time to my students. My travel time is my time. I do meet up with friends from time to time, and from place to place, but mostly, my time is my own.

A few years ago I decided to try something different (for me). I signed up for a cycling tour with Ciclismo Classico. This sounded fun, as I enjoy cycling and liked the idea of being with a guide in unfamiliar areas, and distances. I was a bit hesitant, to travel with an organized tour. Obviously, my time would not be exactly “my time”.  I’d be sharing my days with people I did not know. The day came to join the tour. So I soon realized that I was the only person who did not know anyone. Everyone else was connected in some way. There was a family, friends of the family, friends of friends, married couples, etc., and there was me – the solo traveler. I was welcomed with smiles and laughter, and I soon felt very comfortable. Everyone was very kind, and the guides were terrific. I was meeting “like-minded” people. We all seemed to appreciate: good food, a bit of good wine, outdoor activity, cultural travel and a lot of laughter.

The Transformation:

I was the least efficient cyclist in the group (a nice way to say, “I was the weakest and slowest”).  It didn’t matter to me because I was enjoying taking in the beautiful scenery while some of the strongest cyclists (literally) were pushing me up some of the hills.

Therefore Ciclismo Classico has changed my mindset on organized group travel. I have found a new way to travel “solo”… by joining an organized tour. I’m looking forward to my next adventure with Ciclismo Classico.

Break new bonds, and throw away old molds. You’ve never expected anything like Ciclismo Classico. It makes the changes you need!
