Welcome to Agropoli! We’ll meet at 12:30 pm at San Francesco Resort, a genteel oasis, former monastery, and our first hotel. You’ll have time to change after lunch for today’s warm-up ride, which will take you around the outskirts of our coastal town home for the next two nights. We will visit the vineyard and cantina of the best organic wine and olive oil producers in the area for an afternoon tasting.
Set above the harbor of ancient Agropoli, the San Francesco Resort is a four-star hotel known for its gorgeous views, outstanding services, and hospitality.
We’ll head north and back in time to the 7th-century B.C. Greek colony of Paestum to visit one of the most historically significant sites of the ancient world. The drama of the Doric temples and the urban fabric of the old city will capture your imagination as will the mystery of the famous “Tomb of the Diver”.
The area is also known for its unique natural products, the most famous being buffalo mozzarella. In the afternoon in addition to a gelato stop you will visit a buffalo farm and its innovative dairy where you’ll get to taste the authenticity for yourself.
We’ll venture inland toward the village of Vatolla, where you’ll enjoy a sumptuous farm-to-table lunch and learn the secrets of local cuisine with ingredients straight from the garden. Then, we’ll start our scenic descent (mostly) all the way to Castellabate, a charming fishing village with ancient origins.
Our hotel, the four-star Villa Sirio, was once the summer house of a patrician family from the region of Campania; the rooms overlook either the undulating hillside of Castellabate or its 12th century Saracen castle on Mediterranean Sea. The hotel also features a private beach. Dinner is on your own with lots of options from delectable seafood to simply pizza and gelato.
We’ll ride along the sea following an ancient road that will take us through Acciaroli, which is where Hemingway found inspiration for his classic, The Old Man and the Sea. We’ll also visit the ancient ruins of the Greek colony of Velia. Today’s ride finishes in Ceraso, where we then take a shuttle to Palinuro.
The King’s Hotel overlooks the stunning Baia Del Buon Dormire on top of Capo Palinuro. The town center is just a short walk from our hotel and there’s access to a beautiful private beach, via a stairway of 400 steps. Before a fabulous dinner on the beach we will visit Camello’s Gelateria, one of Italy’s ottimo, and be treated to a fun informative gelato making demonstration.
We saved the best ride for last... we’ll cycle an extraordinary stretch of coastline, where mountains drop directly to the sea where countless turns reveal awe-inspiring views over the Tyrrhenian Sea. From the town of Camerotta to Scario, we’ll board a local boat and explore a stretch of coast and the magnificent Baia degli Infreschi, a secluded cove where we can take a dip in the crystal blue waters. Back on our bikes, we follow the dramatic cliffs along the coast all the way to Maratea. The day’s adventure includes a “lesson” about granita (as well as more gelato stops).
After a visit to town we’ll enjoy an aperitivi and farewell dinner at our hotel’s roof terrace with panoramic view of the town, the sea, and its stunning surroundings.
After breakfast and around 9am, we offer a group shuttle to the Maratea train station to make your connections to Naples, Rome, and beyond.
