Sardinia is often described as almost a continent in itself by many travelers, and you’ll see why on this unforgettable journey by bike as we discover the island’s diversity of landscapes, fascinating history, and distinctive cultures. We begin our bicycle tour in Tresnuraghes and then traverse the very center of the island through areas still untouched by tourism. From here, we continue on to discover the stunning coast in Cabras with its lagoons and flamingos, and explore the long sandy beaches of the Sinis peninsula, weaving through green pastures, rolling hills and mountains, oak forests, and past sand dunes and the sea with its ever-changing colors. Along the way we’ll encounter old mining ghost towns, discover the ancient Phoenician and Roman cities of Tharros and Nora, and ride along the breathtaking and winding coastal road to Pula, the perfect village to end this exciting biking tour and cultural journey.
We’ll sample the many flavors of the island on our cycling tour and discover how its unique regional cuisine varies from mainland Italy. Here, food is sacred and is the link that connects the locals to the land – the element that brings village communities together. On our journey through the island we’ll discover this connection and delight our palates with some of these delicious local dishes and regional wines. Sardinia actually produces the largest number of grapes of all Italian regions – more than 100 different local grapes – and our bike trip’s route passes through the wine vineyards of Malvasia di Bosa and includes a visit to the Contini winery. We’ll also make cheese with a local shepherd, stop at an olive mill to taste the local olive oil from Montiferru, and enjoy a sunset serenade by the famous Sardinian Tenores group. Welcome to Sardinia! Upon arrival in Alghero, we’ll take a breathtaking 1.5-hour transfer to Tresnuraghes. At 1 pm we meet for lunch and introductions followed by bike fittings and a quick warm-up bike ride into the tranquil countryside. We ride through the wine vineyards of Malvasia di Bosa. After the ride, we’ll have time to relax or take a dip in the pool at our charming hotel overlooking the sea.
We begin our day in Montiferru and set out in the pristine countryside where nature is interrupted only by the sound of cowbells. You will feel as though you are in a painting - feel free to stop and talk with local shepherds about their lives in this peaceful part of the world. Along the ride, we’ll stop at an olive oil mill to taste the local olive oil from Montiferru. We end our ride in Cabras, a beautiful village built among lagoons. In Cabras, visit the Contini winery, where Mr. Contini himself is keeping the delicious, citrus flavors of Vernaccia alive in Sardinia. Back at the hotel, we will be joined by a famous Sardinian Tenores group who do an impressive polyphonic throat singing, making a sound that can touch the deepest chords of the soul.
On today’s ride, we’ll explore the peninsula of Sinis with its long sandy beaches, cycle into the area of Vernaccia wine and then climb a gentle slope into the olives groves of Seneghe. If time permits, we will visit the museum of Cabras that hosts the incredible Giganti di Monti Prama, sand stone gigantic statues that were discovered in the seventies in Sinis that pre-date ancient Greek history. On the way back we can do a bit longer ride and visit Tharros, an ancient Phoenician and Roman town, unique! We head back to Cabras and we will go out for dinner to a local pizzeria.
We’ll start our day pedaling through the Marmilla, a beautiful area where small and rounded hills are covered with massive fields. Our cycling stage ends in Siddi where we will visit Casa Puddu and S’Apposentu restaurant, the food “temple” of Chef Roberto Petza. After lunch we’ll shuttle to Pula.
On our final full day of riding, we’ll cycle a loop around the Costa del Sud. Delight in the absolute beauty of a road that caresses small golden coves and embraces landscapes spotted with solitary Spanish watchtowers. Stop to visit Tuarredda, a beach that leads into the emerald green water. After lunch, we’ll shuttle back to Pula. Then in Piazza del Popolo, Pula’s main square, enjoy an aperitivo while watching the laid-back local scene. Tonight’s final dinner will be a delicious end to an exciting journey exploring Sardinia’s cuisine.
After breakfast, your guides will transfer you to the Cagliari Airport (about a 45-minute drive) to continue on to your next connection.
