Tuscan Fantasy Family Bike Tour
An Idyllic Family-Friendly Tuscan Cycling Adventure, Based in a Splendid local Agriturismo
Enjoy a truly authentic rural Italian experience, staying with a welcoming Tuscan family in their energy-independent agriturismo. This centrally located ecolodge lies at the heart of several family-friendly Tuscany cycling routes. It also offers a variety of active and cultural experiences, all making the most of the beautiful countryside and pretty towns of the Siena Province.
This is one of our Tuscan bike tour vacations most attuned to the needs of those with kids and even grandparents. You’ll spend all 6 nights at Agriturismo Il Molinello, a family-run “farm-stay”. Basing yourself in this agriturismo provides a wonderful opportunity to experience for yourself an authentic and rustic Tuscan way of life.
As a working farm, kitted out with typically appointed Tuscan accommodation, Il Molinello is perfect for families of all ages. Whether it’s taking part in olive oil tastings or learning how to make pizza (including the sourcing of all your own ingredients), there’s plenty to do at the farmstead. And there’s much for the children to do outside too—whether its playing with the local kids, digging their own vegetable garden, or exploring the Tuscany bike routes in the softly rolling hills enfolding this gorgeous agriturismo.

Day by Day
You will be welcomed at Terontola train station, before we take you on a half-hour’s drive through the striking Crete Senesi scenery. We’ll arrive at your home-away-from-home for the next 6 days—the Agriturismo Il Molinello—around midday. At 12:30pm we aim to meet up in the Molinello Enoteca, for some lunch and a brief introduction talk.
In the afternoon we’ll make sure you are all safely fitted to our top-of-the-line bicycles. Then it’s time for the first of many Tuscan cycling adventures, with a ride around Asciano. On this lovely warm-up ride we will stop at the gelato shop in Rapolano Terme. After you’ve had your fill of gelato, we’ll ride back to Il Molinello. An optional extra loop is also available.
Val di Chiana
Today we ride along the Val di Chiana (with an optional extra loop) reaching Fattoria Santa Vittoria for a truly rustic, historical and organic feeling. From the moment you enter Fattoria Santa Vittoria you’ll feel as if you have stepped back in time. Fattoria Santa Vittoria uses modern day equipment, but it’s set among old rooms and impressive old historical equipment. Here you will visit the cellar, have lunch and a wine tasting.
Crete Senesi, Brunello di Montalcino
On today’s ride we head down to Figline, where we will walk around the market and buy some food before departing on our bikes a few kilometers ahead to Gaville. Here we'll enjoy a beautiful picnic in front of the ancient abbey of Gaville. After lunch, visit the Museo della Civiltà Contadina. Opt for an extra loop and continue on to Greve in Chianti and loop around to the Fattoria by way of San Polo in Chianti. Others can go back to the Fattoria from the picnic spot for an afternoon by the pool.
Siena Scavenger Hunt
The historic city of Siena is listed as a world heritage site by UNESCO. Piazza del Campo is the heart of the town and is the home to the famous summer horse-race, known as Il Palio. In the morning there’s an exciting scavenger hunt looking for some of the 17 contradas’ fountains with Emma and Guido (Sandro’s children) and some of their Italian friends. After a light lunch on your own in a typical Sienese osteria, there’s a guided town visit (including the visit to a Contrada Museum). Dinner is also on your own in Siena.
Family Day on the Farm
Today we will work with Nonno Mauro (Sandro’s Father) and Guido (Sandro’s son) to create your own vegetable garden (when you return home you’ll be able to follow your garden on Facebook!), harvesting the vegetable for our meal and picking the eggs from the hen house. During the activities Emma (Sandro’s daughter) will teach some Italian. Enjoy the pool, the playground and a soccer match in the garden, or a ride with Guido (Sandro’s son) in the Val d’Orcia. Tonight, we will have pizza!
Rapolano Terme and Adventure Park Saltalbero
Today there’s a short ride to Rapolano Terme to spend the day at the Adventure Park Saltalbero. Enjoy 7 acrobatic courses among the trees. A fun challenge for measuring balance, coolness, agility, and dexterity in complete safety. Together we’ll prepare and have a barbecue in the park with an optional visit to the handcrafted fashion workshop in Chiantishire. Ride back to the farmhouse to get ready for our farewell dinner at Castello di Modanella. Late afternoon at il Molinello you’ll have an olive oil tasting course with Alessandro, official ONAOO taster.
After breakfast around 9 am we offer one group shuttle (approx. 30 minutes) back to Terontola Train Station to make your connecting flight back home
